Liquid gold, this toffee sauce is sinfully good, made with just five ingredients, butter, brown sugar, cream, a splash of vanilla, and a touch of salt. It’s equally perfect to pour over a slice of pound cake or bowl of ice cream. You won’t be disappointed.

This recipe makes about 1½ cups of Toffee Sauce. Toffee sauce can be made ahead of time before serving and refrigerated. Before serving bring to room temperature or reheat sauce on the stovetop over low heat or briefly in the microwave.
Recipe type: Dessert Sauce
Serves: about 1½ Cups
Toffee Sauce:
  • ½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
  • ½ cup heavy whipping cream
  • 1 cup firmly packed light brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  1. In a medium-sized heavy bottom pan, combine butter, cream, brown sugar, vanilla, and salt.
  2. Cook over low heat, stirring occasionally until the butter has melted and the sugar has dissolved. Increase the heat to medium and bring to a boil, then reduce heat to a simmer and cook for 3 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat, set aside to cool until ready to serve, and desired consistency is reached, toffee sauce will thicken as it cools. Refrigerate leftovers.
